How to Choose the Right Broomstick Putter

So, you’ve decided to explore broomstick putters—and with good reason. They can offer unmatched stability, consistency, and a new level of confidence on the greens. But with a growing number of models, lengths, grips, and head designs to choose from, how do you pick the right broomstick putter for your game?

This post will walk you through the most important factors to consider when choosing a broomstick putter, whether you’re buying off the rack or getting custom-fitted.

1. Get the Right Shaft Length

Shaft length is the foundation of any broomstick putter setup. Most broomstick putters range from 43″ to 52″, but the best length for you depends on your height, arm length, and posture.  There are two main postures that people use when using a long putter.  There are golfers like Bernhard Langer who stand more upright – he was using a 47″ putter and he is around 5′ 9″ tall.  On the other end of the spectrum, you will find people like Adam Scott – at 6′ 2″ he bends over more and has been using a 45″ putter.  Part of the different length is the different putting style, although Langer has described using both styles with his putter.  Langer primarily uses a style where he holds the top of the putter steady with his lead hand while he moves the putter like a pendulum with his trail hand.  Adam Scott, on the other hand, moves the putter mostly by rocking his shoulders with the trail hand just along for the ride more so than powering the stroke.

If you don’t have a variety of long putters to test out, you can use clubs in your bag starting with the driver.  If that is too long, then move to your fairway woods, etc.  Hold them like you would if you were putting, and when you find one that feels comfortable, measure from the butt end of the grip to the bottom of the club where it was touching the ground – this is likely longer than the measured length of that club as you probably had it sitting near the toe.  I would also check that your eyes are roughly over the ball, or just inside the ball line.

Fitting Tip: Most golfers will fall between 46″–50″, but don’t be afraid to try different lengths on the putting green before committing.

2. Choose the Right Putter Head Style

Head shape plays a big role in alignment, forgiveness, and how the putter feels through the stroke. Broomstick putters typically come in two head types:

Mallet Heads

  • Larger, more forgiving
  • Better alignment aids
  • More stable on off-center hits
  • Ideal for straight-back, straight-through strokes

Blade Heads

  • Smaller, more traditional look
  • Less forgiveness, more feedback
  • Preferred by golfers with slight arc in their stroke

Recommendation: Most players will benefit from a mallet broomstick putter due to its added forgiveness and easier alignment.

3. Pay Attention to Weight and Balance

Broomstick putters can vary significantly in head weight and shaft balance.

  • Heavier Heads: Great for smooth, slow strokes and consistent tempo.
  • Lighter Heads: Easier to manipulate but may require a more controlled motion.

What to Look For: You want a putter that feels balanced and stable during the stroke. Some brands allow adjustable weights so you can dial it in.

4. Alignment Features Matter

Broomstick putters naturally promote a square path, but clear alignment aids can make aiming even easier.

Look for:

  • Long top lines
  • Multi-line alignment systems
  • Contrasting colors or sight dots

A clean, confidence-inspiring alignment system is especially helpful when learning a new setup.

5. Custom Fitting vs Off-the-Rack

You can certainly buy a broomstick putter off the shelf and play well—but custom fitting ensures the best fit for:

  • Shaft length
  • Lie angle
  • Head weight

If you’re serious about maximizing performance, consider visiting a fitter with broomstick-specific options (not all do).

6. Budget and Brand Preferences

Broomstick putters vary widely in price. Some premium options exceed $500, while solid performers are available for under $250.

  • LAB Golf (DF 3 Broomstick, Mezz.1 Max)
  • SeeMore
